Scott Jennings uses thin slabs of porcelain and paper patterns to create his unique hand-built tableware. From teapots to the humble cup, Scott captures the plasticity of the material in each piece. The rough forms are pinched, stretched, patterned and assembled completely by hand. He leaves clues as to how each piece was constructed in the form of exposed seams or thumbprints. Transparent, brightly colored glazes are used to finish each piece because they accentuate the details in the form and add a vibrant quality to each piece.

Scott studied ceramics at California State University Fullerton, earning a B.F.A. in ceramics in 1996. He has since been involved in the ceramics industry as a technician and worked as a ceramics instructor at Mt. San Antonio College and at the Irvine Fine Arts Center. He is currently living in San Francisco and has a studio space at The Red Brick Studio in the Mission District.

“I choose to make pottery because of the excitement and satisfaction that I get from discovering new forms. I am interested in utilitarian vessels and find that they provide endless avenues to explore form and surface design. Each piece that I make stands in stark contrast to the manufactured goods of the world around us; they are imperfect, irregular, and not exactly repeatable. I strive to make pieces that are visually stunning and that have friendly tactile qualities. Ultimately I hope that the user contemplates how ceramics with unique characteristics can fit into and enhance their daily routines.”
